How It All Started
What started in 2004 inside a small church with summer camps and outreach based on the belief that the arts can connect us to our Creator in powerful and healing ways sparked the realization that more was needed. More time, more resources, more tools, had to be made available if local teens were going to break the cycles that had led them into complicated and difficult circumstances.
In 2011 Legacy Ministries, Inc./ LegacyWorks was established and its founders began looking deeper. Why is it that so many teens are falling through the cracks? Why, in the city of Wichita do we expect that 1 out of 4 students will not finish high school? Why do 3 out of 4 students find themselves stuck in a cycle of poverty? Why are so many teens caught in a system that regularly fails them?
With the purchase of 945 S. Wichita, an old two-story home known today as The Legacy House, a group of open hearted, creative minded, Jesus followers embarked on a journey to meet teens where they are, find answers to these questions, and come alongside them. It is a journey that has changed their lives, and the lives of every person they have connected with along the way.
